Malcolm Jones Professor, and Vice Chair for Research and Research Education, Department of Radiology
Professor, Departments of Neurology, Psychiatry, and Physiology
Professor, Honors College, University of Texas, San Antonio
Clinical Investigator, Neurology, VA Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas
Research Interest
My research focuses on the development of software tools and strategies for modeling human neural systems, emphasizing detection of disease-related and treatment-induced alterations in inter-regional connectivity.
I am NIH funded to develop tools for coordinate-based meta-analysis of the neuroimaging literature, with the goal of developing “starting models” which serve to improve model fit and enhance the discriminant power of the models. I am DOD funded to apply these imaging/modeling strategies to study post-traumatic stress disorder. RII web link http://ric.uthscsa.edu/

Research Interest
I am a Nuclear Medicine physician with research interests in translational and clinical medicine. In translation research, I have had a long interest in nanoparticle drug delivery and have developed new ways to label nanoparticles with diagnostic and therapeutic radionuclides. Imaging of nanoparticles has lead to the development of novel nanoparticle-based methods of delivery drugs. Nanoparticles composed of lipids, known as liposomes, have been my greatest focus. In clinical research, I have had a long interest in gastric emptying as investigated with the gold standard technique of nuclear imaging. I have found that the rate of gastric emptying is an important controlling factor for postprandial glucose levels and that patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension frequently have excessive rapid gastric emptying.
